I know that the former is ostensibly a band and the latter a solo project, but to my ears the hazy, psychedelic rock that each project produces isn&#8217;t exactly a world apart. Okay, Atlas Sound is more keys, less guitars, but they&#8217;re both critically adored and don&#8217;t really do a lot for me, despite on paper being the sort of thing I should totally dig. I just find it all overly meandering. Go figure.</p>
<p>I do know, however, that it&#8217;s Atlas Sound that&#8217;s just announced a <a href="http://exclaim.ca/News/atlas_sound_to_play_vancouver_on_north_american_tour" target="new" title="Exclaim vs ATlas Sound">North American tour</a> in support of last year&#8217;s <a href="http://www.insound.com/Parallax-CD-Atlas-Sound/P/INS99598/" target="new" title="Parallax"><i>Parallax</i></a> that covers a lot of geography if not a lot of markets. It does, however, include a March 6 date at Lee&#8217;s Palace in Toronto, whereas the original announcement did not, so that&#8217;s something for local fans. Tickets are $16.50 in advance.</p>
<p><strong>MP3:</strong> <a href="http://cdn.epitonic.com/uploads/tracks/Atlas_Sound-Te_Amo.mp3" title="Te Amo">Atlas Sound &#8211; &#8220;Te Amo&#8221;</a><br />

<p>Also just announced is a date from Los Angeles indie-harpist <a href="http://www.activechildmusic.com/" target="new" title="Active Child">Active Child</a>, who will be at Lee&#8217;s Palace on May 15 as part of <a href="http://www.brooklynvegan.com/archives/2012/01/active_child_go.html" target="new" title="BV vs AC">a tour</a> in support of his debut full-length <a href="http://www.insound.com/You-Are-All-I-See-CD-Active-Child/P/INS97866/" target="new" title="You Are All I See"><i>You Are All I See</i></a>. <p>If you weren&#8217;t able to catch <a href="http://www.reignofterror.tv" target="new" title="Sleigh Bells">Sleigh Bells</a> at The Phoenix on February 14 or just wanted to see them in a much less enjoyable setting amidst a much less enjoyable crowd for a lot more money, they&#8217;re opening up both <a href="http://redhotchilipeppers.com/" target="new" title="RHCP">Red Hot Chili Peppers</a> shows at the Air Canada Centre on April 27 and 28. Whoooo. <a href="http://www.insound.com/Reign-of-Terror-CD-Sleigh-Bells/P/INS103244/" target="new" title="Reign Of Terror"><i>Reign Of Terror</i></a> is out February 21 and the first single is now available to download.</p>

<p>February 14 is a big day for <a href="http://www.shearwatermusic.com" target="new" title="Shearwater">Shearwater</a> as it marks the release of their excellent new record <a href="http://www.insound.com/Animal-Joy-CD-Shearwater/P/INS103393/" target="new" title="Animal Joy"><i>Animal Joy</i></a>, but that day will also see the reissue of their 2004 album <a href="http://misrarecords.com/store/#shearwater" target="new" title="Winged Life"><i>Winged Life</i></a> on LP for the first time. That was the last album for the Shearwater that existed as a side-project for Jonathan Meiburg and Will Sheff compositions that didn&#8217;t fit in <a href="http://www.okkervilriver.com" target="new" title="Okkervil River">Okkervil River</a> before becoming a more distinct creative entity driven wholly by Meiburg. But it&#8217;s also a gorgeous record, so that it&#8217;s going to find a home on some turntables is good news. Shearwater open up for Sharon Van Etten at Lee&#8217;s on February 21.</p>

After all, the outfit&#8217;s idiosyncratic yet hooky pop style would fit quite easily in the musical traditions of any of the above. </p>
<p>The truth of it, however, is far less foreign; they&#8217;re from Brooklyn, though if you want/need more exoticness than that, Papini originally hails from Kansas City. And the accent? Just affectation. That doesn&#8217;t make their tunes any less enjoyable, though, and it makes the odds that they&#8217;ll be able to tour North America that much greater &#8211; one in one, as a matter of fact. In support of the January 31 release of their debut on <a href="http://www.mergerecords.com" target="new" title="Merge">Merge</a>, they&#8217;ve got a <a href="http://www.groundcontroltouring.com/artists/hospitality" target="new" title="Hospitality on tour">short tour</a> of the northeast planned and it includes a January 11 date at The Horseshoe &#8211; while it doesn&#8217;t show up on the above itinerary, <a href="http://www.ticketweb.ca/t3/sale/SaleEventDetail?dispatch=loadSelectionData&#038;eventId=4133445&#038;pl=embrace" target="new" title="Hospitality @ Embrace">it is happening</a>, tickets $10. And apparently they&#8217;re supporting some outfit called <a href="http://cavemantheband.com/" target="new" title="Caveman">Caveman</a>? Come for the Hospitality, stay for the Caveman or vice-versa? The important thing is that you go.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s interesting that the <a href="http://nordicmusicprize.com/" target="new" title="NMP">Nordic Music Prize</a> &#8211; awarded to the best Scandinavian record &#8211; only has a lag time of a few days between announcing <a href="http://www.jajajamusic.com/index.php/2011/11/longlist-for-nordic-music-prize-announced/" Target="new" title="Ja Ja Ja vs Nordic Music Prize">the long list</a>, with a dozen records from each of Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland, and <a href="http://www.jajajamusic.com/index.php/2011/12/nordic-music-prize-shortlist-announced/" target="new" title="Ja Ja Ja vs Nordic shortlist">the short list</a> of a final twelve from all countries. All signs pointed to them finally coming clean about the when, where &#8211; already a poorly kept secret, sure &#8211; but more importantly the who. And yet here we are at Friday with no official word, just seven weeks out from when it&#8217;s all supposed to go down (August 29 and 30 at Burl&#8217;s Creek near Orillia, Ontario) and so instead of reporting facts, I will delve into the rumour mill for goodies. Though when it comes straight from the artist&#8217;s mouth, it probably counts as somewhat more than rumour. I refer, of course, to the fact that <a href="http://nin.com/" target="new" title="Nine Inch Nails">Nine Inch Nails</a> has decided that Bonnaroo would not mark their final live North American appearance, as originally intended, and instead will do a few more dates including a headlining slot at the Ontario edition of V Fest. And in addition to NIN, a few other acts came to light this week though nothing major: <a href="http://www.thunderheist.com/" Target="new" title="Thunderheist">Thunderheist</a>, <a href="http://www.troubleandrew.com/" target="new" title="Trouble Andrew">Trouble Andrew</a> (does his presence imply <a href="http://www.myspace.com/santigold" target="new" title="Santigold">Santigold</a>? I can&#8217;t imagine anyone would want him on his own), and though not confirmed, I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s any big secret what the August 30 &#8220;TBA&#8221; for Toronto on the <a href="http://www.petshopboys.co.uk/" target="new" title="PSB">Pet Shop Boys&#8217;</a> <a href="http://www.pollstar.com/resultsArtist.aspx?ID=25798&#038;SortBy=Date&#038;SearchBy=pet%20shop%20boys" target="new" title="PSB @ Pollstar">Fall itinerary</a> means.</p>
<p>So yeah. Another week, another non-announcement. On the plus side, it&#8217;s evident that they&#8217;re trying to put together something really good and the last Canadian V of the Summer will have a bona fide, big-time headline act &#8211; I wouldn&#8217;t call myself a fan of Trent but there&#8217;s no arguing his stature &#8211; but on the downside, even a leak this size hasn&#8217;t been enough to prod them into announcing anything, which to my paranoid sensibilities doesn&#8217;t necessarily bode well for the rest of the bill. But it&#8217;ll come, and until then, I&#8217;m going to engage in more rampant and unfounded lineup speculation while clearing out a big old pile of links and stuff.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2009/07/catching-up-with-bowerbirds-phil-moore.html" target="new" title="Paste vs Bowerbirds"><i>Paste</i></a> talks to <a href="http://www.bowerbirds.org" target="new" title="Bowerbirds">Bowerbirds</a> about their second album <a href="http://www.insound.com/search/showrelease.jsp?from=90804&#038;p=INS59416" target="new" title="Upper Air"><i>Upper Air</i></a> was released this week. <a href="http://www.daytrotter.com/dt/the-bowerbirds-on-the-backs-of-walt-whitman-the-choruses-are-crystals-concert/20030722-110996.html" target="new" title="Daytrotter vs Bowerbirds">Daytrotter</a> and <a href="http://theyshootmusic.at/posts/Bowerbirds" target="new" title="TSM vs Bowerbirds">They Shoot Music</a> have also released sessions with the band &#8211; audio and video respectively &#8211; who are <a href="http://bowerbirds.org/index2.php?page=shows" target="new" title="Bowerbirds on tour">on the road</a> to support. They&#8217;re not doing anything August 29 or 30, but do have a date at Sneaky Dee&#8217;s next week on July 14 so it&#8217;s unlikely they&#8217;re playing V Fest.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.magnetmagazine.com/2009/07/09/wrens-watch-special-report-july-9-2009-download-brand-new-wrens-song-below/" target="new" title="Magnet vs Wrens"><i>Magnet&#8217;s</i></a> &#8220;Wrens Watch&#8221; feature has coaxed another new song demo MP3 from <a href="Http://www.wrens.com" target="new" title="Wrens">Wrens</a>, who continue to work on their follow-up to <a href="http://www.insound.com/search/showrelease.jsp?from=90804&#038;p=INS20374" target="new" title="Meadowlands"><i>Meadowlands</i></a>. It&#8217;s conceivable that they could make the trek up here for V &#8211; the calendar is clear &#8211; but probably haven&#8217;t been invited.</p>

The band also played <a href="http://www.chromewaves.net/virginFestival2007.php?concert=editors" title="chromewaves vs Editors">V in 2007</a> and would certainly be welcomed back, but are probably going to stick to Europe for the Fall before coming to North America to promote.</p>

They&#8217;ve got a November European tour scheduled &#8211; they could do North America before that, but probably no dates before the record is released.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.mewsite.com" Target="new" title="mew">Mew</a> are releasing their new album <a href="http://www.insound.com/search/showrelease.jsp?from=90804&#038;p=INS61431" target="new" title="No More Stories..."><i>No More Stories&#8230;</i></a> on August 25 and have already been tapped to play some of Nine Inch Nails&#8217; other &#8220;final&#8221; shows &#8211; why not this one? <a href="http://www.spinner.ca/2009/06/25/mew-repeaterbeater-free-mp3-download/" target="new" title="Spinner vs Mew">Spinner</a> has an MP3 from the new record.</p>
<p><strong>MP3:</strong> <a href="http://aolradio.podcast.aol.com/aolmusic/mp3s/Mew_Repeaterbeater.mp3" title="Repeaterbeater">Mew &#8211; &#8220;Repeaterbeater&#8221;</a></p>
<p><a href="http://pitchfork.com/tv/#/episode/1990-fleet-foxes-at-pitchfork-music-festival-08/1" target="new" title="PF vs FF">PitchforkTV</a> is running video of <a href="Http://www.myspace.com/fleetfoxes" target="new" title="fleet Foxes">Fleet Foxes&#8217;</a> performance from Pitchfork Festival last year. Obviously they do the festival thing, but with an August 4 date at Massey Hall, a V slot is unlikely.</p>
<p>But for everyone who had tickets for that Fleet Foxes show and were crushed that it meant missing the <a href="Http://www.yeahyeahyeahs.com" target="new" title="YYY">Yeah Yeah Yeahs</a> show at the Kool Haus that same night, rejoice! A second Yeah Yeah Yeahs show has been added for August 5, same venue. Tickets $32.50, on sale today at 10AM. And yes, this pretty much guarantees that they won&#8217;t be at V &#8211; that is, if being at Reading/Leeds across the Atlantic wasn&#8217;t guarantee enough.</p>
<p><a href="http://offthebeatentracks.tv/2009/episode-8-the-thermals/" target="new" title="OTBT vs Thermals">Off The Beaten Tracks</a> gets an acoustic video session out of <a href="http://www.thethermals.com/" target="new" title="The Thermals">The Thermals</a>. They&#8217;re in Europe through mid-August. Swinging by Toronto en route back to Portland seems improbable.</p>
<p><a href="http://austin.decider.com/articles/spoons-britt-daniel,30105/" target="new" title="Decider vs Spoon">Decider</a> and <a href="http://www.austin360.com/music/content/music/stories/austin360/2009/07/0709xlmusic.html" target="new" title="Austin360 vs Spoon">Austin360</a> have features on <a href="Http://www.spoontheband.com" target="new" title="Spoon">Spoon</a>. Besides their own Spoon-fest in Austin this weekend and performance at the <a href="http://www.wanderlustfestival.com/" target="new" title="Wanderlust">Wanderlust</a> yoga/music festival in Lake Tahoe at the end of the month, they&#8217;re not doing much. They could be playing V.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.contactmusic.com/new/home.nsf/interview/glasvegasx09x07x09" target="new" title="Contact Music vs Glasvegas">Contact Music</a> has an interview with <a href="http://www.glasvegas.net" Target="new" title="glasvegas">Glasvegas</a> &#8211; they&#8217;re one of many bands at Reading/Leeds the weekend of V, so are obviously not playing Toronto. What&#8217;s more curious is the routing of their mid-September tour supporting <a href="http://www.kingsofleon.com/" target="new" title="KoL">Kings Of Leon</a>, which puts them in Long Island on the 14th, Montreal on the 16th, Ottawa on the 17th, Hamilton on the 19th, London on the 20th and Detroit on the 22nd. Obviously this leaves many opportunities to make a Toronto stop, and yet there currently is none. As I said, curious.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.daytrotter.com/dt/ida-maria-little-parts-of-a-tornado-all-hoarse-and-glorious-concert/20030724-3738075.html" target="new" title="Daytrotter vs Ida Maria">Daytrotter</a> has a session with <a href="http://www.myspace.com/idamaria" target="new" title="Ida Maria">Ida Maria</a>, who seems awfully reluctant to make her Toronto debut. She&#8217;s on tour in North America till early August and then will be back for <a href="http://www.monolithfestival.com/" target="new" title="Monolith">Monolith</a> in Denver in mid-September. Obviously a lot more dates would have to surface to keep her on the continent from late August till then, but I can see it happening.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=106383032&#038;ft=1&#038;f=1103" target="new" title="NPR vs Phoenix">NPR</a> is streaming a radio session with <a href="Http://www.wearephoenix.com" target="new" title="Phoenix">Phoenix</a>. They&#8217;re playing V in the UK the weekend before the Ontario edition, and are back in September for a string of dates including Monolith and <a href="Http://www.aclfestival.com" target="new" title="ACL">ACL</a>. Odds of them playing our V are slim to none.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.list.co.uk/article/18797-st-vincent/" target="new" title="The List vs St Vincent"><i>The List</i></a> talks to <a href="http://www.ilovestvincent.com" target="new" title="St Vincent">St Vincent&#8217;s</a> Annie Clark, who is at the Horseshoe on August 8 and will consequently not be at V Fest.</p>
<p>And while I know it&#8217;ll never happen, I would love beyond words for <a href="Http://www.superchunk.com" target="new" title="Superchunk">Superchunk</a> to come and play V Fest. Or play anywhere nearby. This acoustic version of &#8220;Detroit Has A Skyline Too&#8221; came from a recent radio session. Loverly.</p>
<p><strong>MP3:</strong> <a href="http://www.mergerecords.com/audio/superchunk/detroit-stateofthings.mp3" title="Detroit Has a Skyline">Superchunk &#8211; &#8220;Detroit Has A Skyline&#8221; (acoustic)</a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.theboxerrebellion.com/" target="new" title="Boxer REbellion">The Boxer Rebellion</a>, who made headlines by charting in the top 10 on iTunes&#8217; charts with the wholly independent release of their second album <i>Union</i>, will be at the Mod Club on August 8 &#8211; tickets $11.50. Though they&#8217;d probably fit the V demographic, this show means they&#8217;re unlikely to be there.</p>
<p><strong>Video:</strong> <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9yzbmx-Zu8" target="new" title="Evacuate">The Boxer Rebellion &#8211; &#8220;Evacuate&#8221;</a></p>
<p>Either of these bands &#8211; <a href="http://www.trailofdead.com/" target="new" title="TOD">&#8230;And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead</a> and <a href="http://www.thesecretmachines.com/" Target="new" title="Secret Machines">The Secret Machines</a> &#8211; would be a decent addition to a festival bill, but they won&#8217;t be to V because they&#8217;ve got a date at Lee&#8217;s Palace on September 22 &#8211; tickets $18.50.</p>
<p><strong>MP3:</strong> <a href="http://www.worlds-fair.net/mail/SecretMachines/Dreaming%20of%20Dreaming.mp3" title="Dreaming Of Dreaming">The Secret Machines &#8211; &#8220;Dreaming Of Dreaming&#8221;</a><br />

<p>You know, this little &#8220;who&#8217;s playing V&#8221; meme turned out a helluva lot more tiring than I expected. Whew.</p>

A post like this.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.nme.com/news/muse/45413 "target="new" title="NME vs Muse"><i>NME</i></a> reports that British prog-rock space cadets <a href="Http://www.muse.mu" target="new" title="Muse">Muse</a> have announced the release of their fifth studio album, <i>The Resistance</i>, for September 14 with <a href="http://collect.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=bandprofile.listAllShows&#038;friendid=15049710&#038;n=MUSE" target="new" title="Muse on tour">massive world touring</a> to follow. I had thought they might feasible <a href="Http://www.virginfestival.ca" target="new" title="V Fest">V Fest Toronto</a> headliners, following their shiny red-jumpsuited performance at <a href="http://www.chromewaves.net/virginFestival2006.php?concert=muse" title="Chromewaves vs Muse">the first edition in 2006</a> but they seem to have all their record promotion ducks in a row with the US <a href="http://u2.com/tour/index/" target="new" title="U2 on tour">U2 support dates</a> and the European headlining dates &#8211; any visits to Canada will probably come much later.</p>
<p>But there is some V Ontario news &#8211; the dates and one of the acts performing have basically been confirmed thanks to <a href="http://mutemath.com/" target="new" title="Mute Math">Mute Math&#8217;s</a> <a href="http://www.myspace.com/mutemath" target="new" title="Mute Math">MySpace</a> &#8211; they&#8217;re listed as performing at V Fest Toronto on August 29 and 30.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.dodosmusic.net/" target="new" title="The Dodos">The Dodos</a> will release their third album <i>Time To Die</i> on September 15. Expect to hear some of the new material when they open up for <a href="Http://www.beirutband.com" target="new" title="Beirut">Beirut</a> at the Phoenix on July <del>6</del> 9.</p>
<p>The duo of Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss have reconvened as <a href="http://www.theequasi.com/" target="new" title="Quasi">Quasi</a> have a new, still-untitled record in the can. Look for it to have a name by the time it comes out on October 27.</p>
<p>Wayne Coyne of <a href="http://www.flaminglips.com" target="new" title="Flaming Lips">The Flaming Lips</a> confirms to the <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/news/20090615_flaming_lips_album.shtml" Target="new" title="BBC vs Flaming Lips">BBC</a> that their new record will be a double-disc affair entitled <i>Embryonic</i> and is targeted for a September, though more likely later in the Fall release. He also gives a video interview to <a href="http://www.clashmusic.com/feature/flaming-lips-interview" target="new" title="Clash vs Flaming Lips"><i>Clash</i></a>. Hey, maybe they can headline V Fest. They still technically owe us a show.</p>

For it was this Wednesday night just past that <a href="Http://www.patrickwolf.com" target="new" title="Patrick Wolf">Patrick Wolf</a> played a one-off show at Le Poisson Rouge in Manhattan, previewing material from this forthcoming album <i>The Bachelor</i> &#8211; out in the UK on June 1 and in North America on June 2 and August 11, digitally and physically, respectively. And even though said performance was intended to be a mostly solo and mostly acoustic intimate affair, the live reports and photos from <a href="http://stereogum.com/archives/photo/patrick-wolf-le-poisson-rouge-nyc-5609_068231.html" target="new" title="Stereogum vs Patrick Wolf">Stereogum</a>, <a href="http://www.prefixmag.com/photos/patrick-wolf-le-poisson-rouge-photos/" target="new" title="Prefix vs Patrick Wolf">Prefix</a>, <a href="http://themusicslut.com/2009/05/patrick-wolf-le-poisson-rouge-the-sun-is-often-out/" target="new" title="The Music Slut vs Patrick Wolf">The Music Slut</a>, <a href="http://www.nypress.com/blog-4060-patrick-wolf-at-(le)-poisson-rouge.html" target="new" title="NYPress vs Patrick Wolf"><i>The New York Press</i></a> and <a href="http://www.spin.com/articles/patrick-wolf-debuts-10-new-songs-nyc" target="new" title="Spin vs Patrick Wolf"><i>Spin</i></a> make it sound like it was just as enthralling and magical a show as his more extroverted performances.</p>
<p>I mentioned just <a href="http://www.chromewaves.net/2009/05/mogwai-and-the-twilight-sad-at-the-phoenix-in-toronto/" title="Chromewaves vs Mogwai">a couple days ago</a> that a proper Wolf tour &#8211; also featuring <a href="http://www.livingthingsmusic.com/" target="new" title="The Living Things">The Living Things</a>, <a href="http://www.plastiscines-music.com/" target="new" title="Plastiscines">The Plastiscines</a> and <a href="http://takebacktheradworld.com/" target="new" title="Jaguar Love">Jaguar Love</a> &#8211; was being assembled in conjunction with his new label <a href="http://www.nylonmag.com/" target="new" title="NYLON">NYLON</a> and while a full itinerary is yet to be announced, I&#8217;m pleased to be able to announce that in addition to the handful of dates <a href="http://community.livejournal.com/patrickwolf/592827.html" target="new" title="Patrick Wolf tour">already sussed out</a>, there will be a Toronto show on June 17 at the Mod Club, tickets on sale May 16. It&#8217;s fitting that this news come just a couple days before my birthday because Wolf&#8217;s <a href="http://www.chromewaves.net/2007/05/the-magic-position/" title="Chromewaves vs Patrick Wolf">May 2007</a> show at the El Mocambo on my actual date of birth was one of the most fun evenings I&#8217;d had in ages, and I have similarly high expectations of this show. With that gig, <a href="http://www.wearephoenix.com/" target="new" title="Phoenix">Phoenix</a> and <a href="Http://www.nxne.com" target="new" title="NxNE">NxNE</a> all falling in the same week, it&#8217;s shaping up to be a pretty crazy June. Crazy awesome.</p>
<p><a href="http://themusicslut.com/2009/05/8-questions-with-patrick-wolf-2/" target="new" title="TMS vs Patrick Wolf">The Music Slut</a> caught Wolf for a quick interview on his visit to New York wherein he revealed that the sequel to <i>The Bachelor</i>, entitled <i>The Conqueror</i>, will now not see release until next year and the two may still be combined into their originally-intended double-album under the name <i>Battle</i> in the near future. <a href="http://www.burtonmail.co.uk/burtonmail-leisure/displayarticle.asp?id=415564" target="new" title="Burton Mail vs Patrick WOlf"><i>Burton Mail</i></a> also has an interview.</p>
