Rattled By The Rush

There will be no NXNE club crawls for me this year. I was looking at the $24 price tag on a wristband whilst at Soundscapes this afternoon, and figured there was no way I was going to get $24 worth of shows out of the thing. First off, I am just exhausted right now – going out tonight didn’t seem like a very appealing idea. There’s not much playing tomorrow that I want to see, and I already have a reasonably busy evening planned (Toshack Highway and Sianspheric in-store at Soundscapes, followed by Lost In La Mancha at the Bloor). Saturday I do want to go see The Salteens and Sekiden at the ElMo, but for one show I can just pay the cover. A wristband just was not economically viable.

Picked up the single for Radiohead’s There There. The title track is terrific, the b-sides are pretty much throwaways. I remember a day when some of Radiohead’s best tunes were the b-sides. No longer, I guess. But it only cost me $3.99 and has whetted my appetite for the new album out on Tuesday.

Mark Eitzel talks about his new live-in-Greece album The Ugly American here.

While I haven’t paid much attention to the Manics lately, I am interested in their forthcoming double-CD of b-sides, rarities and covers entitled Lipstick Traces (A Secret History Of The Manic Street Preachers). No word on a North American release, but it’s released in the UK on July 14.

Rainy Day Music

Another soaker on the way home tonight. I took refuge in the pub downstairs for an hour after work hoping the unexpected thunderstorm would blow over before I went to get my bike and ride home, but I had to settle for a steady moderate shower instead. But I was still drenched head to toe, and isn’t that really the important part?

The two Posies albums I won on ebay a couple weeks ago showed up. I am acquiring new music faster than I can listen to it!

The rain seems to have finally tapered off – the question is, will it stay away long enough for me to ride to the Bloor to see The Pianist, or will I have the honour of getting soaked twice in a day? Decisions, decisions. Of course, staying home and hiding under the covers is a reasonable option as well.

Well this is interesting – The secret history of Apple Records and Apple Computers. From Done Waiting.

Some Ryan Adams news – the on-again/off-again four-disc box set and forthcoming and oft-delayed Love Is Hell album appear to be one and the same. The box will contain the four albums The Suicide handbook, 48 hours, Pinkhearts and Love is Hell from which Demolition was culled. Now when it will be released depends on how Ryan feels about the material he’s currently recording with Ethan Johns – if that’s stronger, then that will be the new album and the box will come out later. If not, the box will be released and a new proper album whenever it’s ready. The box will be discounted – for a 4-disc set, anyway – so as to cost around the same as an album and an EP. Not a bad deal if you can digest that much RA in one swoop. And to top it all off, he’s talking about a new Whiskeytown record. Time will tell how much of this comes to pass, but it’s nice to see the man concentating on music again instead of being a media whore.

To Here Knows When

Today. Vacuumed. Made an appointment to go see an apartment next week, excited about that. Even if I don’t like it, it’s actually going out and looking at places instead of just talking about it. This is progress. Did some work. Watched some baseball. Played some guitar. Put the old Telecaster up for sale, though only half-heartedly. I will have to do better than that. Went out to dinner with Azra, whom I hadn’t seen in a couple months. Watched The Recruit. Eh. I don’t like Colin Farrell. Have to go to bed early tonight so I can get up early tomorrow morning, bike down the Exhibition, THEN bike 50 km along the Gardiner and up and down the Don Valley Parkway, then back to the Exhibition. THEN haul my ass back home. Good times.

Perfect Teeth

I am biting down on gauze, the right side of my mouth is numb and a little swollen, and overall my teeth ache some and feel all weird. BUT, the damned wisdom tooth is gone. Bloody easy procedure – the dentist went in with the freezing needles, came back in a few minutes. “Can you feel this?” Nope. “How about this?” Nope. “Can you feel this?” Nope. Clink. “There’s your tooth.”. It certainly helped that the offending chomper didn’t seem to have any real roots, it looks more like a piece of candy corn than anything – it just popped out (they let me keep the tooth. It’s oddly fascinating). So one down, three to go. Those ones won’t be nearly as easy, though. I have to go back in in a couple weeks to discuss removing those… I am feeling wussy about the whole thing. They don’t hurt, they’re not bothering me, why not leave well enough alone? Eeeep. Ironic that the one that was causing me the most grief turned out to be the most benign.

I’m glad now that I decided against going to Field Day. They’ve been denied a permit to use the space where they were going to hold it, but organizers insist they can work it out and won’t give refunds until the 9th, in the event that it actually didn’t happen. Yeah, that’s super. So people who would be travelling from far and distant lands should proceed with their travel plans and hope that there’s a show going on when they arrive? Nice. Full story here. I will instead be enjoying NXNE… unless of course it’s cancelled on account of SARS. Fucking SARS.

Somebody Get This Freaking Duck Away From Me

This year’s Stanley Cup final was obviously preordained. Now, no matter who wins, I have a suitable mascot. How often can you say that? While on the topic, I would like to extend my sympathies to fans of the Ottawa Senators… I would like to, but I won’t. Instead, as a lifelong Leafs fan, I will instead extend an emphatic shrug and a “My world and welcome to it”.

Pics of Earth taken from Mars. The Mars Global Surveyor takes snapshots of home from 86 million miles away. Fantastic.

I wish NXNE would get their damned schedule up. From the looks of things, there might well be enough shows I want to go to to warrant a wristband, but I need to make sure they’re not all going on at the same time.

When Irish mope-rockers JJ72 lost bassist Hilary Woods, I predicted they were finished. However, they’ve made the canny move of replacing their hot chick bassist with another, uh, hot chick bassist. Welcome Sarah Fox to the fantasies of pubescent (and post-pubescent) British indie rock boys everywhere.

Off to Waterloo tomorrow for Ross’ wedding. A shame about the weather – the forecast calls for thundershowers the next few days. It occurs to me that I haven’t gotten them a gift, and while they actually requested that we don’t give gifts (a pain to get back across the border to Toledo, apparently), I will still get them something at some point. Maybe matching umbrellas.
