[...] Chromewavs.net Joel Plaskett is something akin to a national treasure to those who place great value on things like classically-styled, distinctly Canadian-flavoured pop-rock songwriting and Plaskett has hardly been shy about keeping his creative riches to himself. Over a seventeen-year career, reaching back to the first Thrush Hermit EP and through his work fronting The Emergency and under his own name solo, he’s released at least eight proper albums and more EPs, the most recent of which – Three – was a triple-disc set. And yet for all of the material that he’s released officially, countless more has remained in the vaults – at least until now. Plaskett has just released EMERGENCYs, false alarms, shipwrecks, castaways, fragile creatures, special features, demons and demonstrations, compilation of demos, outtakes and whatnot culled from his post-Thrush Hermit works – those cupboards were cleared last year – that does a good job of reinforcing just how consistent a talent Plaskett is; though the material contained within spans a decade, it all hangs together very nicely and feels far from a collection of cast-offs.
As a forlorn, deprived Plaskett fan in northern California who hates downloading, can't get the vinyl in any local stores, and is reluctant to pay exorbitant shipping fees during a Canadian postal strike, I wish the contest were open to US residents too! Oh, well. I'm glad Joel is realizing his legacy; I think his reach is much wider than he knows. I have wonderful memories of walking through a nearby beach town one summer night a year or two ago, convinced I was hearing phantom Joel songs but thinking I was imagining things. I soon found three Australian buskers powering through the "Truthfully, Truthfully" record, whereupon I ran across the street (don't think I looked both ways, yikes), threw money in their guitar case, and spontaneously massacred their version of "Work Out Fine" by singing along. We each took each other for displaced Canadians, but none of us were. Wow. I hope Joel returns to the Bay Area for a show someday, as I'm the only one of my friends who has not had the chance to be wowed by him live.

I still haven't heard this! I'm saving my ears for the vinyl version on a big fat pair of headphones. The REAL way to listen to one of Canada's greatest! Viva la Plaskett!

I was so excited to sneak a listen to Joels new CD. He has again managed to capture the hearts of his devoted fans with new (old) hits we havent had the pleasure of hearing before. I loved hearing different lyrics and melodies which I can identify as current tracks from recent CDs. It was an experience listening to the CD, as it always is. What a beautifully creative way to spend an afternoon, unwinding in the time portal that is this CD. Even the track layout is great, after it was all done it was waiting to be discovered!
