The audience at the SPvTW screening I saw got the first laugh in really early. Before the film started -- during the preview for 'DEVIL'. When the screen read 'From the mind of M. Night Shyamalan' there were many guffaws and hilarity ensued. Truly an odd moment.

One noteable thing for me was that the 'fake' rock music in the move was the best that I remember in any previous movie. Usually the music played by the characters in a movie gets Hollywooded so much it's unbearable. I'm thinking of getting the soundtrack for this one. Beck should consider doing a full album in the general vicinity of Sex Bob-omb.

On Scott Pilgrim – also saw it on Friday, loved it, and have to agree with pretty much everything you said, particularly the non-surprise on it remaining a niche movie, and the oddness of how book-faithful it was until halfway through, then becoming a mishmash of characters and plot elements until the end, as if the plan at the outset was to keep to the plot but was then abandoned after a certain point. Interesting how the fight with Roxy became an amalgam of the Roxy/Scott and Ramona/Envy fights, and that the Knives fight got moved to the climactic scene. And I could have done without the re-imagining of the Katayanagi twins segment as a battle of the bands with dragons and an ape (no Kim Pine kidnapping!), but them's movies.

"Fun? In Toronto?" I also missed those same locations you mentioned, but understood that a) running time is an issue and b) you can't always get permission to use certain locations. I'd be curious to know which ones they tried to get but couldn't. But as you say, the spirit, if not always the letter, of the source was there. I actually loved some of the off-book stuff they did (the Lucas Lee stunt doubles, the bleeping of Julie Powers, etc.). And seeing it with a pumped and partisan audience was fun.

And if it becomes another Buckaroo Banzai, well, how great is that company? "John Bigboo-tay! Tay!" Oh, Lectroids!
