I'd like to say I chose to see The XX in their opening slot over their headline show, but it was really just that the tickets were already purchased by the time the second (but previous) date was announced. But I was glad I did, as it was a great night in total. The XX were every bit as mesmerizing as I'd hoped they'd be, and from all reports (including yours), it was better seeing them as late in the tour as possible. The only downside to them being openers was the three missing songs from the album (would Hot Chip have begrudged them a little longer set?). I really think it's a plus rather than a drawback that their organic approach to technology results in the occasional wandering meter here and there. It adds a more human touch, and doesn't take away from the flow at all. And I agree with you, if only for their sake, they should beat it home through the ash cloud already and see what effect all that touring has on their writing.

Yes, Hot Chip's reputation as a killer live act was well-founded. Booties were shaken. Refreshing to see the birthday boy still refusing to make any attempt at sharp dressing (unless he deliberately aspires to look like Kyp from Napoleon Dynamite). 1. Close eyes. 2. Reach into suitcase. 3. Pull out oversized Wham! tee and old yellow sweatpants. 4. Wear in front of 2,000 strangers with cameras.
