I remember the same floor-clearing back in ’92 during "You made Me Realise." However, this didn’t happen at ATP. I’m guessing it won’t happen tonight, and tomorrow night, in Los Angeles. Awesome pics Frank, those are some of the best I’ve seen of them on the web.

Fantastic review – you’ve summed up exactly how I felt about the show. I was prepared for the holocaust – well, forewarned, at least, but the experience was mind boggling. I hope I get the chance to see them again.

Great review! Excellent show too, although I perceived the vocals to become audible only about 2/3 of the way through their set. Even Kevin Sheilds got upset about it onstage.
I was sans-earplugs for most of the show; the sound WAS deafening, but smooth and musical at the same time. "Realise" certainly is a beautifully hellish oblivion..

Possibly your longest single-subject post/review to date -- definitely four days' worth!

Great show, used "protection", but took in some of the less agressive (i.e. Loveless-derived) numbers sans earplugs, foolishly or no, just because. Having them in left me craving more high end, but at least I was plugged for the "holocaust". Which I wasn't expecting, by the way, so for me it was as baffling as it was traumatizing. Now that I have some perspective on it, I'm more haunted by it than anything else.

As to the extent of attrition, from where I stood (just in front of the sound board), I only saw a total of about 5 people leave -- most stalwarts around me were in for the duration.

By the way, Rob: "I was warning people at the Kool Haus, like some old cranky dude." I hope you had your sign saying "The End Is Near"!

excellently written piece on the Toronto show. I was lucky enough to attend the Chicago show and I had no issues accepting the complimentary earplugs for the holocaust which clicked in at just over 22 mins. We had no real mass exodus but I’d say a good 10-12% bailed by the 12 minute mark.

Great review and you pretty much echoed my thoughts on the Flowers of Hell.

I was surprised at how many people stayed for the noisestorm this time around. During the Loveless tour in Vancouver they pretty much cleared the floor by the end of 18+ minutes. Of course, there were a few fools (who, me?) left in a state of senseless bliss/exhaustion/vacuity, including a few who were lying on the dancefloor making (dirt)angels.

Granted I had earplugs in this time, but it seemed like while it wasn't necessarily louder at the Koolhaus, the intensity was even greater. I don't remember my internal organs being pummelled in '91 like they were a few nights ago.

I was at the Opera House gig in 1992, and I was not prepared then. I am certain my Tinnitus was caused by it. Lots of people indeed cleared the floor.

I was warning people at the Kool Haus, like some old cranky dude. Especially the dopes who chose not to wear the plugs. Oddly I saw less bailing from where I was standing, than I did 16 years ago. In fact – though I looked stupid – I brought some “workman’s” ear protectors for Realise just in case. I put them on at the 6 minute mark as even with the plugs, the pain still crept in. It was a great experience though.

Not sure how some of those daredevil dudes felt afterwards.

I saw Frank haggling at the front about access when I walked in!
