And from this list, Caribou, and Holy Fuck are the only choices who push the envelope.

Everyone else is just a "critical darling"

A Northern Chorus' final album, The Millions Too Many could and should have made the list. Sure, it wears its influences on its sleeve, but no more than any other nominee on the current short list.

There are many on that list whom I believe shouldn't win based on their level of originality.

Final Fantasy was an excellent choice for the case of winning based on originality, but each year, the award goes ever more political with safe and mainstream choices.

That Crystal Castles show was anarchy incarnate. In spite of the circumstances you describe, your photos turned out really well. Sounds like you missed the short set/break/"encore" as described in eye. To clear that up, apparently there was a 'disagreement' between Alice Glass and a sound guy after her mic abuse led to its demise, and after she pulled a diva and left, there was a 5-10 minute interval after which things were resolved and they returned to close out the show (but not before she put the boot to the drum kit). At the risk of making too much of it, we may just have witnessed some myth-making in progress – I choose to take the view that it follows in the esteemed tradition of the Pistols or JAMC. There. I said it.

Interesting how diametrically opposed your POV from the pit was to that of James Simons in the eye article. Sounds like he was stuck on the boardwalk at the back. Being somewhere in between the two of you myself, when a thousand plus people in front of you stand on their bench and you have a bench under you, what are you going to do? When it's a free outdoor show you have to take it as it comes.

I'm disappointed that The Acorn didn't make it and surprised that Crystal Castles didn't make it either. I would love to see Basia Bulat or Plants and Animals take it, although I'm not sure what the chances of that would be.

I'm putting money on Stars or Two Hours Traffic.

If I could hand it out myself, I'd give it to Caribou. That album shimmers.

Sunset Rubdown, where are you?!
