The Soldiering Life

The hardest-working band in indie rock? The second leg of the “Never Send To Know With Whom the Van Rolls, It Rolls With Thee” tour will bring The Decemberists back to Toronto June 6 at Lee’s Palace with The Long Winters as support. Their show last month was terrific – this one will be a little less intimate, sure, but should still be a fine evening of music. The Long Winters were pretty damn good when they opened for Death Cab last year, too. Boo-yah.

Plexifilm has posted the cover artwork from the forthcoming Galaxie 500 DVD, Don’t Let Our Youth Go To Waste, out June 29.

Pitchfork is on a Pixies reunion jag for today’s “We Are The World”, scrutinizing three tracks from their reunion show live CDs.

I watched 24 on tape delay as I had to watch the Leafs lose in double-overtime live. It’s really the only way to do it. But what a treat I had waiting for me: Ack. Eek. Urk. Okay, that was the most tense and unnerving episode in a while, congratulations to the producers for managing to torpedo my snarkiness about most of this season and genuinely freak me out. The infiltration of Saunders’ apartment building was really tense, but I’m getting irritated with the ‘always-one-step-ahead’ villian device, I mean, come on. I realize that it’s a plot necessity, but I’m still feeling a little cheated. As for the closing scene was… man. Jack’s bosses have got to stop getting into aircraft with him. It just ends badly. I really felt for Jack and Chapelle, and as Sam correctly pointed out, that may have been the first truly good piece of acting we’ve seen this season. Bravo. Finally – what’s with putting Cleveland on the list of cities to unleash the virus in? Cleveland? Why not just pick Buffalo? Sheesh. These last five hours are gonna be good – and the next one is in less than 48 hours.

  1. Five Seventeen says:

I’ve been a naysayer for most of this season, but they seem to have put the romance story aside (who really cares about Chase and Kim?) and are returning to form. I think I actually had my eyes on the screen the entire episode!

  2. sam says:

glad to see they’ve gotten us back on track with the show. this was one intense and nerve-wracking episode. every episode from now until the very end should be like this. leave the romance between kim and chase. concentrate on this. what’s next? saunders gets the body. jack will have it traced back but saunders won’t be as stupid as to have the body taken directly to him. he’ll have the van driver identify chappelle. so — where to now?? michelle should start a nosebleed pretty soon too. oh, there’s the affair guy. his wife will at least have come in contact with the virus. hopefully a general panic will start soon as people wake up and news of the chandler plaza hits the airwaves :)

i thought that keeping it silent on the final clock tickdown was DOPE – it intensified the scene’s power surprisingly well

  4. Five Seventeen says:

The clock thing was nice, but I didn’t like it. The beeping always seems so jarring at times like that and seems to add to the overall tension. Kind of a "no time to mourn" thing.

  5. Rick says:

I must be one of the rare few that’s enjoyed the entire season, but that was definitely the best ending to any episode yet. The whole last half was awesome – coupled with Alias last night it’s been a while since my stomach was knotted up for that long. And count me in on the thumbs up for the closing beeps, the silence totally fit last night. Now wtf am I supposed to do tomorrow – Leafs/Sens Game 7 or 24?!

  6. Frank says:

I was all for the ‘moment of silence’ thing at the end, but I am a big sap, not a cold heartless monster like Five Seventeen.

I taped Alias and 24 last night but haven’t watched the former yet. Watched the latter as soon as the Leafs got around to choking. Will probably do the same tomorrow.

  7. sam says:

ha! we habs fans are a lucky bunch — saturday, game 6; sunday, 24; monday, game 7; tuesday, 24 :)

watch the game and tape 24 for after the game.

  8. Pete says:

Ya what a dilema eh? Game 7 or 24….damnit!

Awsome episode one of the best yet, the ending left me silent as the clock went silent, great episode, the reviewers weren’t kidding, it has lived up to the hype….but now the question remains…what about Michelle?
